Happy Herb’s Transdimensional New and Used Vehicle Dealership
http://ftp.io.com/pub/usr/hammond/HTML/netvehicles.html
Happy Herb runs an internet vehicle dealership and purports to offer anything from an ocean liner to a dog sled.  All the technical specs are given for every kind of transportation imaginable in a set format i.e. structure, power, statistics, armour??  If you are into vehicular transportation, though probably not half as much as ol’ Herb, this site is interesting enough.  It’s presented as a technical manual, and has no pictures (come on, Herbie!)  Land, Water and Air/Space vehicles are covered.  It’s hard to grasp what the point of this site is, but Happy Herb seems to think it’s very clear.  Um, go figure…….seems maybe a bit of a joke, but the facts look accurate enough, even for the Lotus circa 2017.
Verdict: Lots of facts and figures for those who dig transport.  Fairly dry, but curious.

Unique Auto Mall
http://www.register.com/automall/index.htm
Wanna buy a pick-up truck, mini-van, or muscle-car?  This site is…well…. is going to be, the place to look.  They have set up the skeleton of what could be a great vehicle trading centre on the net.  Separated into categories of private & dealer ads for cars, bikes, boats, classic cars, etc, you can browse pictures and info of a wide range of motors for sale.  They also provide info on finance, lots of good auto links, and a search function if you want something specific.  The whole site is well structured and styled and as soon as more people find it, will offer  a good place to search for your dream machine.
Verdict:  Yes, its early days, but this is the way to shop!  Good links and info.

Goodyear Tyres
http://www.goodyear.com/
A slick and smooth corporate site of the blimp-wielding tyre giant.  Nice graphics and easy-to follow links take you through the fascinating world of car tyres.  It’s a big site with many pages, but there is a lot of information here.  New products, a feedback page, how to choose the right tyre, etc.  They even have their annual company report on line as well as info on their other chemical pursuits.  They do make a good tyre, and this site tells you why.  After you are convinced, you can do a search for your nearest dealer.  Home shopping here we come!
Verdict: You might only want to visit this site every few years or so, but if it saves you from buying another brand of tyre just once, it will be a very good year!

News, rally reports, pics, current WRC standings, driver profiles, links, this site is the official info system for the exciting world of rally driving.  Lengthy run downs of each race around the world with full results listed.  There are only a few pics of cars in action, but more are promised.  Well-written driver profiles and pics are here, and the links are great, it’s rally, rally, rally all the way here, proving that WRC is actually a real sport, not just a Sega computer game as one would have thought.
Verdict: If you are a major rally driving enthusiast, this is your number one bookmark.  If you just love to watch the sport, hire a video!  There ain’t too much excitement here.

Divided into two sections, general motoring and motor sports, the FIA site provides a lot of information about international motoring.  General pages give you travelling tips, legal facts and figures, advice and safety info, while the sport pages give you the low-down on the racing scene; calendars, rules & regulations, press releases.  All very informative, and worth bookmarking, but as far as web sites go, rather lacking in razzamatazz.
Verdict: Enthusiasts should memorise this entire site.  You will really impress everyone at the next car club Christmas party with your inside info from the official lords of racing.

Toyota On-Line Australia
http://www.toyota.com.au/
This is a visually stunning and comprehensive site from the  motoring giant.  The kind of site that really demonstrates the potential power of internet marketing.  A plethora of information packed into an easy to navigate and beautifully designed environment.  The opening page hits you with a major dose of blue, hands you a car key and invites you to “turn it on”.  Very sexy!  John Laws then welcomes you to the site…yeah!! Even more sexy!!  Major new product info, dealer network, parts, FAQ, even a link to a free car classifieds, so you can ditch your old bomb.  Their links alone are worth bookmarking.
Verdict: After navigating around the site a while, you will be compelled to buy a 4WD on your visa card.

This Sydney group of family owned car yards representing a number of different makes of new cars plus the usual used car division has really captured the feel of car salesmanship and put it on the net.  They even have scanned in their newspaper ads for this weeks specials.  Its a very good site with photos of each dealership, complete new model info in a huge cavalcade of pop-ups, and all the extra info you need when looking for a car, or a fleet of cars.  If you are in the market for a car, it’s all here.

Volkswagen
http://www.vw.com/
“On the road of life, there are passengers and there are drivers…. drivers wanted”.  So begins this journey into VW land. A map with all the pages marked on it, including a rest stop for the fatigued makes this site appealing and inviting.  Drivers wanted…… sounds like a pizza delivery shop, but you soon find out they just need you to buy a Vee Dub.  They have had over a million visitors, and you can see why, with all the stuff they got here.  It’s a way of life, it seems, owning a VW.  There’s even a cute pic of a Kombi shedding a tear over Jerry Garcia’s passing. It’s like the 60’s meets the 40’s meets the 90’s here.
Verdict: If you have the slightest emotional connection with the old Adolf-mobile, check out this site!  It’s really very good.

The Rocky Mountain Institute is dedicated to efficient and sustainable use of resources.  Hence their interest in cars.  The hypercars section of their Home Page is full of comparisons between your average car of today, and what we could be driving if we really wanted to.  Seems quite fictional at this stage, but they say that agreements have been reached by government and industry to get something real happening.  The site is text based and informative, with a few different essays on the issues, along with a couple of sketches of the said “hypercar”. You may want to go through RMI’s other areas of interest while you’re at it, like water, energy, agriculture etc.

This would be a company that you would expect big things from in the web area, and maybe there are, but there seemed to be a lot more missing than was there, especially when compared to other sites.  Sure, they got a couple of cute little animations, but when you follow the “must-see” A-class link and are given an “exciting” cyber-drive through nowheresville when all you wanted to do was check out the cool-looking new car, you wonder if they are doing things right. Detailed history of the company, with quite a few pictures.   Information is there, but the overall feel of the site is about the same as the background, grey, dull.  Conclusion: Mercedes buyers don’t net-surf?

Review: Part of an internationally networked car buying and selling system, Autobytel lists your car on three national sites for $33.00. It seems like a good set up, but the listings were a little leaner than some other sites visited. Could have been a slow week, or perhaps the site has a stronger presence in states other than NSW. The info given on the cars is more limited but it seems quite easy to use the inquiry system once you have found the horseless carriage you desire. The site is well supported by ancillary services such as trade-in estimates, finance quotes, vehicle inspection certificates and editorial, but one wonders whether niche sites have more potential than these universal car portals. - SS

There are some fascinating collections of all the concept cars the major manufacturers have exhibited over the decades along with student designs, tribute sites, galleries, museums, component manufacturers and stacks more. The site itself has a small discussion board community, a shop for books and mags, mailing list and events news. Unbelievably there are about 50 cars featured here that seem to have no trouble falling into the ugly category. It is a wonder how anyone bought them in the first place. The good humoured curators of this fun filled rattle-trap museum give each vehicle a good dose of humiliation topped with a "paper bag" rating from 1 to 5. It is not the car, but the driver who must wear the bag to hide their identity from the mocking masses. Review: Pitching the price at $10.00, no more to pay to sell your car, this site goes some way to bridging the gap between the traditional forms of advertising and the affordable power of the Web. A simple yet powerful search interface provides access to the large range of predominantly dealer sales, though there are still plenty of private vehicles on offer. Search by dealer, new or used, then by either "lifestyle" or "model", before entering the search proper. Region, Kms, price range, among other criteria, lead you to the prospective purchase, followed by a slightly over-obligatory inquiry form to put you on the prospecting list of the dealership's sales team. One good feature of this site is the link to the "Red Book" car valuation, for cost comparison. Plenty of editorial, articles, reviews and news thrown in to the mix could hold your interest but let's face it, you are here to buy or sell, and you won't be doing that every day. - SS

Car accidents are a multi-billion dollar industry. Profits are high when passengers die. Lawyers, smash repairs, insurance premiums, chiropractors, spare parts, wheel chair manufacturers, towing services, car rentals - the list goes on. Each and every crash sets the till bells a-ringing. The bad taste toll-free number, the "sign up now for a free gift" - it all began with good intentions to assist people in their time of need, but what is created is a monument to the profitability of misery caused by unsafe products and lenient licensing laws. Hardly a pixel is devoted to prevention or harm reduction, yet there are plenty of opportunities to bone up on the law to maximise your insurance windfall and reduce your legal liability. - SS

People may complain about revenue raising tactics, but the facts revealed here show that a broad range of potent and carefully considered harm reduction strategies are being implemented to reduce the road toll, educate drivers and improve traffic management. The site itself is formidable in its scope, covering all aspects of motoring from buying and registration to licensing and road building. At times it may be difficult to sort the political rhetoric from the reality here, but the evidence is quite clear that the RTA is making a difference. It's so much sexier to put the pedal to the metal, burn that rubber and feel the throbbing power of the internal combustion engine. Or is it? Car Busters presents a range of alternative viewpoints, including real examples of cities that have had their centres reclaimed by the people. Review: This is the site to accompany the book of the same name. JH Crawford dares to imagine a world where cars are simply unnecessary due to good town planning. The crowning glory of the carfree concept is an entire city built around a flower-shaped train track, with circular suburbs of 12,000 people dotting the train line. 1,000,000 people could live within 35 minutes of each other without a car to be seen, whilst parklands and public areas come to life in the absence of pollution and engine noise. Sounds too good to be true? All it needs is a brave politician and a good consortium of developers with vision. That and perhaps a few security guards to prevent the car industry from sabotaging the project! It is an idea, and through this site maybe one day it's time will come. - SS
